What HEIC is
HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It keeps photos small without dropping quality, but many Windows PCs, websites and older apps still cannot open it.
Which format should you pick?
- PNG if you want the exact pixels: screenshots, logos, text and anything you plan to edit again.
- JPG if you just need the photo to open everywhere and stay small. See HEIC to JPG.

HEIC to PNG on your phone
You can convert straight in your phone browser — no app to install. On an iPhone you can pick HEIC photos straight from the photo picker; the originals in your Photos app are not changed.
HEIC to PNG on Windows and Mac
Windows often shows HEIC photos as blank icons until you install an extension. Convert a photo here instead and it opens in any app. On a Mac, Preview can open HEIC, but converting a whole trip of photos one by one is slow, so converting them here in one go is faster.
iPhones save photos as HEIC to take up less space. It is a newer format, so older software and some websites cannot open it yet, which is why people convert it.
