What GIF is
GIF is the short-loop format the web has used for decades — memes, reactions and simple animations. It only holds 256 colours, which is fine for small graphics but not great for photos.
Which format should you pick?
- PNG keeps transparency and exact pixels — the right choice if the GIF is a logo or graphic you plan to edit or place on a coloured background.
