What Does Our JPG to PNG Converter Do?

Our JPG to PNG converter changes JPG images into the PNG format. JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings, so the tool accepts .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif files.

JPG uses lossy compression. It keeps photos small by removing detail that the eye barely notices, and it removes a little more every time the image is edited and saved again. PNG uses lossless compression, so a PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is. Converting a JPG to PNG gives you a stable copy that will not lose more quality when you edit, crop or save it again.

The conversion runs in your web browser. Your photos are not uploaded to a server, and the PNG has the same width and height as the original image.

People convert JPG to PNG for many everyday tasks: preparing a photo for editing in Photoshop, GIMP or Canva, saving a screenshot that was shared as a JPG, getting a product image ready for a store that asks for PNG, or keeping an archive copy of an image that must not lose any more quality. The converter works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, in any modern browser.

How to Convert JPG to PNG in 3 Steps

You can convert JPG to PNG in three simple steps.

Step 1: Add Your JPG Files

Open the JPG to PNG converter and click the Browse button, or drag your JPG or JPEG files into the upload area. You can add up to 20 images at once, with a maximum size of 15 MB per file.

Step 2: Convert JPG to PNG

Check the list of files and click Convert. Each photo is converted to a PNG image with the same dimensions.

Step 3: Download Your PNG Images

Click Download to save a single PNG. If you converted several images, you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP file.

JPG vs PNG: When PNG Is Better

JPG and PNG are both image formats, but they are designed for different jobs.

PNG is the better choice when:

  • You plan to edit the image. A PNG does not lose quality when you save it again, so it is a safer working file for cropping, retouching or adding text.
  • The image contains text, lines or sharp edges. Screenshots, diagrams, charts and logos look cleaner as PNG because lossless compression does not blur edges.
  • You need transparency later. JPG cannot store transparent areas. After converting to PNG, you can remove the background in an image editor and keep it transparent.
  • A website or app asks for PNG. Some upload forms, design tools and stores only accept PNG files.

Please note that converting does not add transparency on its own: the PNG keeps the same background as your photo. It also cannot restore detail that JPG compression has already removed; it only stops further loss.

When to Keep JPG Instead

JPG is still the best format for most photos. Keep your images as JPG when:

  • File size matters. A PNG photo is often several times larger than the same JPG. For email attachments, websites and social media, JPG loads faster and uses less space.
  • You are sharing finished photos. If you will not edit the image again, there is no quality benefit in converting it.
  • You want to create a document. To combine photos into a single file for printing or submitting, use our JPG to PDF converter instead. For PNG images, use our PNG to PDF converter.

Open our JPG to PNG converter, click Browse and select your JPG images. Click Convert, then click Download to save the PNG files. You do not need to install any software.

Add your JPG or JPEG photos to the upload area and click Convert. JPG and JPEG are the same image format; the shorter .jpg extension comes from older versions of Windows that only allowed three letters. Our converter accepts .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif files.

Upload the photo, click Convert and download the PNG. The PNG keeps the same background as the original photo, because converting does not make a background transparent. PNG supports transparency, so you can remove the background in an image editor afterwards and the transparent areas will be kept when you save.

Select one or more JPG files with Browse, click Convert and then Download. Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG: JPG removes detail to make photos small, while PNG stores every pixel without loss.

You can do it on any device. On a phone, open the converter in your browser, tap Browse and choose photos from your gallery. Tap Convert and download the PNG images. It works on Android and iPhone without an app.
