What HEIC is
HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It keeps photos small without dropping quality, but many Windows PCs, websites and older apps still cannot open it.
Which format should you pick?
- JPG if you just need the photo to open everywhere and stay small — for sharing, forms and printing.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

HEIC to JPG on your phone
You can convert straight in your phone browser — no app to install. On an iPhone you can pick HEIC photos straight from the photo picker; the originals in your Photos app are not changed.
To stop new iPhone photos being saved as HEIC at all, go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". New photos are then saved as JPG.
HEIC to JPG on Windows and Mac
Windows often shows HEIC photos as blank icons until you install an extension. Convert a photo here instead and it opens in any app. On a Mac, Preview can open HEIC, but converting a whole trip of photos one by one is slow, so converting them here in one go is faster.
If your HEIC files won't open or upload
- A form or website rejects your photo: it probably does not accept HEIC yet. Convert the photo to JPG and upload that instead.
- The photo shows as a blank icon on Windows: Windows needs an extension to display HEIC. Converting to JPG fixes it everywhere at once.
- The file ends in .HEIC in capital letters: it is the same format — this tool converts it just the same.
iPhones save photos as HEIC to take up less space. It is a newer format, so older software and some websites cannot open it yet, which is why people convert it.
JPG files are a little smaller and the difference is hard to see. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it was, at the cost of a bigger file.
